iSmartyPants Quality

Throughout the years that I have been selling my pants online, I've seen other sellers come & go.  I've seen some really awesome pants, and some really bad ones.  Some of you may have had a bad experience buying handmade pants (or handmade anything) online (from eBay or a personal site), so I'm typing this up to show you that my pants are built to last.  Here goes..

Let me first say that I make a lot of my own clothes.  Lots of cute tank tops, some regular pants, and tons of soft flannel lounge pants.  I can't say that I've had a problem with any of it, I generally have more problems with the stuff I buy in stores.  Now on to the pretty pictures, fun experiments, and kind words from customers!

MACHINES!

IMO, what you sew with doesn't really matter too much.  Many cheaper machines will make a perfectly fine stitch.  However it has been stated in the past that a certain brand was far superior than the rest, bla bla.  Keep in mind, this is my opinion and there certainly are exceptions.  Singer is crap.  My first machine was a Singer, it continuously sewed through it's bobbin case, and generally gave me a lot of headaches.  My first serger was a Singer, a $600 one.  It was defective from the start (although I didn't realize it at the time because it was my first one & I didn't know any better), and confused my sewing repair man and Singer.  Thankfully the place I got it from sent me a replacement :)

My sewing machine & other serger are both Jukis.  Neither has given me an ounce of trouble, I love them.  Juki makes the majority of industrial machines you find in factories, plus they manufacture some of Singer's higher end models.

Basically what I'm trying to say is, don't believe everything you hear.  Just because a certain brand has been around forever and gave us quality machines in the past, doesn't mean they still do.

SEAMS!

What you see above is the 5 thread safety stitch that my serger makes on every pair of my pants.  It's strong, and prevents fraying.  I also topstitch them to make them super strong!

APPLIQUÉS!

Appliqués are the patches, pictures, etc. that I put on some pants.  A lot of them come from fabric or vintage textiles, which are cut out and then sewn to the pants with a special stitch that prevents fraying.  They are then sealed to prevent frays even more.

When I can't find a particular character or image that either a customer or I want, I use other methods such as hand painting or transfers.  I use high quality paints that are permanent (once again, I have plenty of stenciled t-shirts that wash & wear just fine), washable, and generally look nice.  While there may be people out there who use iron on transfers from wal*mart or the craft store, I am not one of them.  The transfers on my pants are of professional quality, and are created with a heat press, not a regular household iron.  Commercial grade transfer paper needs a lot of heat and pressure to transfer to fabric properly, which is fairly hard if not impossible to do with an iron.

I had me a little experiment...  I made a transfer of my skully and of the kitty in pinx kitty, one on white cotton and one cut out & sewn on some nylon.  Here it is:

Then I washed & dried it approximately 20 times, and...

Aside from my inability to take decent pictures of the fabric, it looks pretty darn good.  You can see a bigger pic by clicking them btw.

I will continue to test this thing & post another photo :)

TRUST!

Why trust me?  Hmm... That's a good question actually.  Well, I have lots of happy customers (see next section).  Although I don't sell on eBay too often anymore, I have 400+ feedback there.  I just opened up an Etsy store, not a lot of feedback yet but it'll grow eventually.
